Suburb Profile

BIRCHGROVE
Birchgrove Oval
Birchgrove 2041

A narrow neck of land knows as Yurulbin (long nose point) from the aboriginal word meaning swift running waters, the point was not included in the grant of 12 hectares given to Dr Balmain because Governor Macquarie had already given it to George Whitfield.

Changing hands several times, Lieutenant John Birch bought it in 1812 and the original home built by him in 1810 from local quarried stone was demolished in 1967 for units, despite efforts by locals to save the classic Georgian property.

In 1886 Frenchman Didier Numa Joubert laid the foundations for the first subdivisions, and Birchgrove began as the suburb it is today.

In 1902 the mud flats of Snails Bay were reclaimed by fill from Cockatoo Island and turned into Birchgrove Park and Oval, now the picturesque centre of neighbourhood sporting activities.

It is also the birth place of Rugby League in NSW.

The dress circle location with city skyline and harbour bridge views, old boathouses and fashionable houses, has made it one of Sydney's most expensive places to live.

There are a number of other small reserves, a church, primary school and hotels.

Transport is serviced by private and public ferry services and RTA buses.

The 2006 Census combines population and other statistics with Balmain and East Balmain.

The median house price for Birchgrove in 2008 is $1,165,000. The median unit price is $587,000.

Dear Chris,

Thank you for all your help throughout the whole process of selling our house in Rozelle. As you know, it was the first time I had ever undertaken such an endeavour and I found your help, advice and assistance invaluable, no to mention all the most basic information you very patiently supplied us with. I also wish to commend you for the way you took into consideration our personal situation, with all the uncertainties that entailed.

So, a big thank you. To use the cliche, "It has been a pleasure doing business with you."

I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude and appreciation to David Beauregard and the team at Harris Partners for working tirelessly to secure a sale for my home in a tough market. The feat was made even more challenging by the fact that another local agent had tried previously and failed. The previous agent had recommended a large "advertising campaign" that left us with nothing but a large advertising bill.

David Beauregard explained Harris Partners' philosophy of 'no sale no charge' and after being left totally disillusioned by the first agent, this made perfect sense. Not only did Harris Partners undertake the job of selling my house without the burden of a marketing bill, they even covered the previous agent's advertising costs making the transition much simpler!
